CCC apologises over Division 3 play-off situation, will look to avoid ‘disjointed’ scene in 2019

The Donegal Competitions Controls Committee (CCC) has apologised for the delay in completing Division 3 of this year’s All-County Football League.

Killybegs, Naomh Brid and Buncrana all finished level on points. Initially, Killybegs were awarded the Cup, on scoring average, with Naomh Brid given the second promotion slot via the same means.

However, Buncrana lodged a query and it was revealed that the regulation used to decide the placings was to be for Championship only.

A three-way play-off ensued with Killybegs and, now, Buncrana emerging as the teams promoted to Division 2.

“Due to our mis-interpretation of the regulations, we had a delay in the playing of play-offs to decide winners and promoted teams in Division 3,” CCC Secretary Declan Martin said in his report to the 2018 Donegal GAA Convention.

“We apologise for any inconvenience caused to the three clubs involved.”

Mr Martin says his committee will have to look closely at the arrangements in Division 3 next year.

He said: “Due to the fact that we had clubs in Division 3 in the senior, intermediate and junior championships, and that the junior championship had to commence in August, there was a disjointed end to Division 3.

“We may have to look at the reduction of free weekends in Division 3 and play extra rounds earlier in the summer.”
