Castlefin man Dermot McGranaghan has been confirmed as a coach of the Irish athletics team at next month’s European Games in Minsk.

McGranaghan was invited by the Olympic Council of Ireland to join the coaching staff for the second edition of the European Games.

The Finn Valley clubman will join a good Donegal contingent at the Games.

Badminton players Chloe Magee, Sam Magee, Joshua Magee and Rachael Darragh will compete while Tir Chonaill AC’s Kelly McGrory has been named as a reserve on the athletics team.

Dermot has a lifelong association with athletics since his younger days as an athlete with Finn Valley AC, more recently coaching at the club and recently joining the staff at Athletics Ireland as a Regional Development Officer.

Previous experience in the international arena saw him successfully lead the Celtic Games squad as manager.

He is one of the McGranaghan family from the Hillhead in Castlefin, a son of Peadar, who continues to coach at Finn Valley while sisters Catriona and Sinead compete in the Finn Valley vest.

Dermot is married to Mary and has two children, Adam and Abbie.

This will be the second edition of the European Games, with the first instalment taking place in Baku in 2015.
