CARNDONAGH native Michael ‘Owen’ McLaughlin is set to defeat his New England welterweight title in Boston on March 18.

Irish boxing is set to take over America on St Patrick’s week with Michael Conlan debuting in New York and Katie Taylor featuring on the Golovkin-Jacobs card – both at Madison Square Garden.

In Boston on March 18, at the House of Blues in Boston, several Irish punchers, including Spike O’Sullivan, Paddy Irwin and Niall Kennedy will be in action, along with 32-year-old McLaughlin.

The Inishowen southpaw McLaughlin (12-1-1) won the New England welterweight crown last July and will defend it when he meets another southpaw in the form of Danny O’Connor (27-3).

The eight-rounder will be on the ‘St Patrick’s Clash 2′ card hosted by Murphy’s Boxing.

McLaughlin took the title with a 79-72, 79-72, 79-73 win over Shakha Moore in Connecticut.

That bout was a repeat of their title tilt from March of last year when, at the House of Blues, the contest was stopped after five rounds due to a clash of heads. McLaughlin drew his debut bout with Valentin Stoychev in Letterkenny back in 2010.

Irish-American O’Connor has previously held the New England welterweight crown.
