Carndonagh survive, but defeat leaves Naomh Colmcille making drop in grades

A YEAR AFTER contesting the Intermediate Championship final, Naomh Colmcille fell through the trapdoor and into the Junior Championship again.

Carndonagh 3-12 Naomh Colmcille 0-9

Carndonagh stunned Naomh Colmcille on Saturday in the relegation play-off at Ture as goals Matthew McLaughlin, Liam Shiels and Dermot Doherty gave the Fodden men a win that preserves their Intermediate status.

It has certainly been a troubling term for Naomh Colmcille. Having had a dream year last year in reaching the Intermediate decider, they have won just three times this campaign.

Already relegated to Division 4 in the All-County League, Naomh Colmcille will also play Junior Championship in 2017 after Saturday’s defeat.

McLaughlin’s penalty set Carndonagh on their way to victory. The teams were level, 1-3 to 0-6, at half-time, but Naomh Colmcille were dealt a blow just before half-time when Michael Lynch was sent off for an off-the-ball incident.

But when Shiels’ long ball bounced over Naomh Colmcille ‘keeper Gary McDaid for a goal, it was advantage Carn.

Naomh Colmcille, with Daniel Clarke, Willie Gillespie and David McNamee scoring points, tried to stay in touch, but the game slipped away from their reach.

Feargal Doherty scored a handful of points for Carn and substitute Doherty netted the third goal to seal a big win.
