Carndonagh’s Clarke to take on Europe’s best

CARNDONAGH’S Labhaoise Clarke has been named on the Irish team for the European Women’s Youth and Junior Championships.

The seven-time Irish champion has been selected as part of a 17-strong squad to compete in Keszethely, Hungary, from August 15-24.

Bantamweight Clarke won her seventh Irish title in June when she demolished Phibsboro’s Mary Geraghty. Clarke handed her opponent two standing counts in the second round and, while Geraghty managed to last until the final bell, the Donegal girl was always in command.

That win came a month after the Carndonagh Community School student defeated Amy Whitmore to win her sixth Irish crown.

Now, Clarke is set to don the Irish vest in Hungary.

“I’m over the moon,” Clarke said. “It was the best news ever, getting that call to say I was named on the squad. I can’t wait now for the training camp to get ready for the Championships.”

This Sunday she joins up with the rest of the squad for a week-long training camp in Edenderry, where they’ll be joined by a number of top youth boxers from Sweden.

Clarke and company will depart for Hungary on August 14th.

She is joined on the squad by the likes of former World and European Junior champions Ciara Ginty and Amy Broadhurst.
