CARL MCHUGH AND his Plymouth Argyle side were beaten 2-0 this afternoon in the Sky Set League Two play-off final against AFC Wimbledon at Wembley.

The 23-year-old played in central midfield for the South Coast side, who went down to an opening goal that was scored by Lyle Taylor 12 minutes from time. The former Falkirk striker tucked home a cross from left-back Caullm Kennedy.

Then, in the 100th minute, Bayo Akinfenwa scored the second from the penalty spot to confirm promotion to League One for AFC Wimbledon.

Lettermacaward native McHugh was this afternoon playing at Wembley for the third time having been part of the Bradford City side that lost 5-0 to Swansea City in the 2013 Carling Cup final and the won the League One play-offs the same season courtesy of a 3-0 win over Northampton Town.

AFC Wimbledon were the better side today over the course of the game and Akinfenwa almost added a second in the final minute with a header, only for Plymouth goalkeeper Luke McCormick to tip over.

Dubliner Graham Carey went closest for anyone for Plymouth as he saw his free-kick stopped by Kelle Ross on 64 minutes.

Despite seven minutes injury time, Plymouth failed to create any late chances. However, they did have a 94th minute penalty appeal when Craig Tanner went down in the area but nothing was given.
