Carl McHugh eyes up chance at a trophy with Motherwell after Cup heroics

Carl McHugh is hoping to get another chance to lead Motherwell out in a Cup final – after his stunning strike fired the Steelmen into the William Hill Scottish Cup semi-finals.

The Lettermacaward man scored late wonder goal at Fir Park yesterday as Motherwell defeated Hearts 2-1.

Curtis Main’s opener was cancelled out by Kyle Lafferty’s penalty, but McHugh, the Motherwell captain, let fly for a cracking 86th minute winner.

“My first touch was decent on my chest; I just hit it and hoped for the best,” McHugh said.

Motherwell will face Aberdeen or Kilmarnock in a Hampden Park semi-final next month with the victor facing Rangers or Celtic in the final.

McHugh skippered ‘Well in the League Cup final against Celtic in November, but lost 2-0.

“We’re still hurting from that final, the way it panned out,” McHugh said.

“We’d love to get back and get a chance to get our hands on a trophy. That’s the aim.

“We’ve had a tough run and played three Premiership teams on our way to the semis. For the boys to bounce back and get back to the semi, it’s testament to everyone. We’re just delighted.”
