Commonwealth blow for Donegal boxers after defeats in Commonwealth Youth Games competition

There was no joy for the three Donegal boxers at this week’s Commonwealth Youth Games competition in Belfast.

Light-flyweights John Moran and welterweight Brian Elliott lost out in their bouts at the Dockworkers’ Club while injury prevented Sean Kelly from lining up.

The competition has been organised by the Ulster Boxing Council to help in the selection of the Northern Ireland boxing team that will go to the Commonwealth Youth Games from July18-23 in the Caribbean.

Despite defeats, the Donegal boxers are still in with a chance of making the Games, though, as this week’s competition was only part of the process used to select the traveling party.

A total of 42 boxers from across 31 clubs weighed and they included the three Donegal punchers.

On Monday night in a quarter-final, Illies Golden Gloves’ Moran (pictured) was beaten 3-2 by Diarmuid Toland in a cracking 49kgs contest.

In a welterweight semi on Monday night, Illies welter Brian Elliot was also edged out. The Letterkenny native was beaten on a narrow 3-2 verdict by St Monica’s Michael Hennessy.

Dunfanaghy ABC’s Sean Kelly had been due to enter, but didn’t box owing to a shoulder injury.
