CAOLÁN WARD WAS part of the IT Carlow team that enjoyed a 1-10 to 0-10 win over IT Sligo this afternoon as the Independent.ie Sigerson Cup got underway. ‘

The third year Sports Science student is in with a shout of featuring for Donegal in the Allianz League for the first time on Saturday night when Rory Gallagher’s side take on Down.

A goal from Chris Healy put IT Carlow in the driving seat, but by half-time the scores were level at 1-3 to 0-6. Cavan’s Chris Conroy and Michael Hurley from Cork helped IT Carlow to their three-point win and they can look forward to a meeting with the winners of DCU and Athlone IT on February 10.

Ward was the only Donegal starter for his side on home turf, although James Ferry from Naomh Muire is also part of the IT Carlow panel.

IT Sligo had Kilcar duo Stephen McBrearty and Eoin McHugh in the half-foward line and Eamonn McGrath from Aodh Ruadh at centre-back. Milford’s Cathal McGettigan, Ross Gallagher from Naomh Bríd and Lee Carr of St Michael’s were also part of the IT Sligo panel.
