Burt goalkeeper in good spirits after injury causes abandonment to SHC fixture

The Burt goalkeeper whose injury forced the abandonment of last night’s SHC fixture between his side and St Eunan’s is said to be in good spirits.

Paul Burns badly twisted on his ankle in the second minute as he came down after attempting to retrieve a bouncing ball at Hibernian Park. Burt were 0-1 to 0-0 up at the time and as Burns, after 40 minutes, was taken to hospital in Letterkenny.

Match referee James Callaghan called a halt to proceedings as the delay and the 7:3-pm start meant it would’ve been impossible to complete the contest in sufficient light.

Burns was Donegal goalkeeper but had taken the decision to concentrate on club hurling this year, as well as coaching Burt minors.

Damian Dowds, the Burt PRO told Donegal Daily/Donegal Sport Hub: “Paul messaged this morning to thanks everyone who came to his assistance last night and to say that there’s no break in the ankle and it’s a dislocation so that he’s lucky enough in some respects.

“GAA protocols say you should not stretcher a player off and you must wait until qualified medical personnel arrive so that’s why there was a significant delay.”

The CCC will decide in the coming days on the rescheduling of the fixture.
