Buncrana preserve Intermediate status, but leave Naomh Colmcille on the brink

BUNCRANA PRESERVED their Intermediate Championship status after pulling clear of Naomh Colmcille in a relegation play-off in Burt yesterday evening.

Buncrana 1-15 Naomh Colmcille 0-7

The Scarvey men pulled clear in the second half to overcome a Naomh Colmcille side that has fallen badly this year.

From the highs of last year when they reached the Intermediate Championship final, the Pairc Colmcille residents have already dropped to Division 4 in the All-County League following a disappointing League campaign.

And now, after this 11-point reversal, they must face Carndonagh in a play-off to see who plays in the Intermediate Championship in 2017 and who will fall through the trapdoor to the Junior Championship for next year.

Buncrana were 0-6 to 0-4 ahead at the break and they took command in the second half, restricting Naomh Colmcille to just three points after the break.

Darach O’Connor’s (pictured) goal helped put the game beyond doubt while five points by Oisin Doherty and three from Odhrán Doherty ensured that this one wasn’t in doubt well before the conclusion.

Scorers – Buncrana: Darach O’Connor 1-2, Oisin Doherty 0-5, Odhrán Doherty 0-3, Oisin O’Flaherty 0-2, Caolan McGonagle, Peter McLaughlin, Shane McClean 0-1 each.

Naomh Colmcille: Daniel Clarke 0-4, Ryan McErlean, Willie Gillespie, Michael Lynch 0-1 each.
