Brett McGinty rises to the occasion for home win over Myers

BRETT MCGINTY scored an impressive win last night against former European champion Jordan Myers in Derry.

The St Johnston man (pictured above with coach Eugene O’Kane) proved too strong for the Sligo City star, who was the European schoolboy champion in 2013.

In a pulsating 69kgs contest at the Maldron Hotel, in a show hosted by McGinty’s club, Oakleaf ABC, Myers was on the wrong end of a unanimous decision.

The two high octane punchers went toe-to-toe for the three rounds, but it was McGinty who held his gaze and forced Myers to blink.

Since landing a Commonwealth Youth Games silver medal back in September, McGinty had recorded wins over Oran Shields and Sonny Coates, but the six-times Irish champion went up a significant notch last night.

The Deele College student made no mistake with an impressive display to take his first scalp of 2016.

Another St Johnston man, Callum Toland – McGinty’s cousin – recorded a fine win over Ruairi Maskey from St Paul’s in Belfast. Toland wasted no time in putting the contest to an end, a belting body blow in the first round enough for a win by TKO.

In an exciting bout, Convoy ABC’s Josh Gibson was edged out by Oakleaf’s Tony McDevitt.
