Brett McGinty named as captain of NI Boxing Team for Commonwealth Youth Games

BRETT McGinty has been confirmed as the Team Captain of the Northern Ireland Boxing Team for the Commonwealth Youth Games in Samoa.

The 16-year-old St Johnston man (second from right above) has been selected as the captain by the squad’s Head Coach, John Conlan.

The five-man squad has completed a two-week training camp in the Australian Centre of Excellence in Canberra and have moved to Apia, the Samoan capital, where the Games get underway on Saturday.

McGinty is a six-time Irish champion who won a bronze medal at the 2012 European Schoolboy Championship in Russia.

He will compete at 69kgs in Samoa.

His selection had caused a stir after he was chosen ahead of Lewis Crocker, whose club, Holy Trinity ABC, called for a box-off between the punchers.

However, McGinty kept his counsel and is gunning for gold in Samoa.

Before his departure, he told Donegal Sport Hub: “I’m not going to get another chance at this. I was too young for the last one and I’ll be too old for the next one. I need to grasp this with both hands.”

The squad also includes Stephen McKenna (Old School), James McGivern (St. George’s), Tiernan Bradley (Sacred Heart, Omagh) and Aidan Walsh (Holy Family).
