Breaking: Bonner reinstalled as Donegal manager for two years

DECLAN Bonner has been reinstalled as the Donegal senior football team manager.

The Na Rossa man was ratified at a meeting of the Donegal County Committee this evening.

There were no other applicants for the position.

Bonner, the Donegal boss since succeeding Rory Gallagher in 2017, has been given a new two year term at the helm.

A statement from the Donegal GAA County Board said “At last Wednesday’s County Committee meeting Declan Bonner presented his report on the 2021 Allianz League Division 1 campaign and the Ulster Championship and announced that he was interested in another term as Senior Donegal County manager.

“Chairman Mick McGrath noted that as Declan’s term was over the position was also open to other candidates and invited clubs to nominate candidates by 5pm on Sunday evening. As of the deadline on Sunday evening no club had nominated another candidate and this evening the County Executive recommended Declan for a second two-year term to County Committee who approved this decision.”

Donegal bowed out of the 2021 Championship after a 0-23 to 1-14 defeat by Tyrone in a semi-final.

Bonner took some time to consider his future, but at a meeting of the county committee last Wednesday the 1992 All-Ireland winner signalled his intention to stay in the job.

As Bonner had completed his existing term, the position was opened to further proposals.

Bonner won back-to-back Ulster titles in 2018 and 2019, but Donegal’s three-in-a-row hopes were dashed by Cavan in the 2020 final.

The Lettermacaward native was previously the Donegal manager from 1997-2000, during which time he led Donegal to the 1998 Ulster final, which they lost to Derry and a late Joe Brolly goal.
