Boxing – Inter-county tournament on Sunday to aid in Boston visit

The Donegal Boxing Board is hosting an inter-county tournament on Sunday as preparations continue for the visit of a Boston Boxing Academy Team in March.

The Boston squad will be in Donegal from March 14-19 with Mark Porter, a native of Buncrana, leading the visiting delegation.

Porter has been living in Boston for 31 years now and this will be the second time in three years he brings a team to Donegal following the visit in April 2016 to the Clanree Hotel.

This year, Donegal will take on Boston at the Buncrana Youth Club on Friday, March 16.

Before that, Donegal will face a Sligo/Leitrim select on Sunday evening at the Letterkenny ABC gym at 4pm.

There are 14 bouts on the bill: Pearse McBride v Evan O’Donnell; Liam Crawford v Joey O’Hara, John Ward v David Sweeney, Thomas McMenamin v Adam Gethins, Andrew Cunningham v Orin Gethins, Jack Walsh v Paul McMahon, Sean Kelly v Dean Clancy, Bryan McNamee v Thomas Myres;, Barry Donnelly v Dean McMorrow, Lee Boyd v Jason Clancy, Ryan Ward Mulrine v Paddy Clancy, Cormac Logue v Sam McBride, Josh McDonagh v James Kelly, Paddy McConigley v Thomas Myres.

A number of club tournaments have been confirmed: Friday, 2nd February – Illies Golden; Saturday 3rd February – Dunfanaghy; Saturday 17th February – Letterkenny; Friday 23rd February – Dunree; Sunday 18th Carndonagh; Saturday 14th April – Raphoe v Second City, Birmingham.

Meanwhile, the North West Zones for 14, 15 and 16-year-olds are on Sunday, February 25. Weigh-in is from 9.30-10.30am, with the draw at 11am and boxing at 12 noon.

The Ulster Finals for these grades will be held at Deele College, Raphoe on Sunday, March 4. Weigh-in is from 9.30-10.30am, with the draw at 11am and boxing at 12 noon. The last time these finals were in Raphoe was back in 2001. The McLaughlin brothers, William and Andrew, of Illies won titles that day as did Dungloe’s Cathal McCauley.

And the North West Zones for 11, 12 and 13-year-olds are on Sunday, March 11. Weigh-in is from 9.30-10.30am, with the draw at 11am and boxing at 12 noon. The Ulster finals for these grades will be held in St Patrick’s Hall, Strabane, on Sunday, March 25.
