Boxing – Donegal trio set to compete in Elite Championships

Three Donegal boxers will line up at the 2018 National Elite Championships, which begin this weekend.

Dungloe’s Matthew McCole, Oakleaf ABC’s Brett McGinty and Davit Tsotsoria from Illies Golden Gloves will all be on the National Stadium’s canvas over the next couple of weeks.

Dungloe light-welter McCole is the first of the local punchers in action as he faces Wayne Kelly from Portlaoise in a 64kgs quarter-final on Friday night.

The carrot for the winner is a semi-final meeting with Paulstown’s Keith Flavin the following week.

McGinty has stepped up to middleweight for this one.

Last year, the flame-haired St Johnston man lost to Dean Walsh in the welterweight final.

Now up to a more manageable 75kgs, McGinty has been drawn against Maynooth’s Glory Carlos Imuala in a quarter-final slated for February 16.

Illies GG’s Tsotsoria will meet St Michael’s Dublin’s Anthony Browne on the same night in an 81kgs quarter-final.

The National Elite finals will take place on February 23 and 24.

There was agony for Donna Barr as sickness forced the Illies GG woman to withdraw her entry.
