Bonner won’t be drawn as trio’s Donegal futures questioned

Declan Bonner has refused to be drawn on the inter-county futures of three players who did not feature in the Dr McKenna Cup.

Donegal fielded an experimental team for the competition with their bid to retain the title coming to an end this afternoon following a narrow 0-14 to 1-10 semi-final defeat by Armagh in Omagh.

None of Mark McHugh, Stephen McBrearty and Darach O’Connor played in the McKenna Cup and have not reported for duty with the squad since training resumed in December.

“I’m not making comment on those,” Bonner, specifically asked about the trio after today’s game, said.

A reporter pressed Bonner as to their status, but he said: “I’m not making any comment. I’m commenting on players we have here working with us.”

2012 All-Ireland winner McHugh came on as a sub in six Championship games in 2018, while he started four League games and made another two appearances as a substitute.

McBrearty appeared in all seven of Donegal’s Division 1 games last year – starting in three – but his Championship game-time amounted to brief stints off the bench against Cavan and Dublin.

O’Connor, who started Ulster and All-Ireland finals in 2014, saw his action limited last year, although he did come off the bench to score a point against Fermanagh in the Ulster final.

That was his only Championship game in 2018, while he played in just two League games last year.

Today, O’Connor scored twice for Buncrana Hearts’ Reservers in a 3-3 draw with Aileach Reserves in the Strand Hotel First Division of the Inishowen League.
