Updated: Two names in the hat for Donegal job as Paddy Carr withdraws

With under 24 hours until the close of nominations, there are now two names in the hat for the Donegal senior manager’s job.

Paddy Carr has tonight announced that he will not be in the race due to work commitments, leaving Declan Bonner and Gary McDaid – who was tonight nominated by the Glenswilly club.

Bonner yesterday confirmed that he will be allowing his name to go forward to succeed Rory Gallagher, who stepped down earlier this month.

Na Rossa clubman Bonner has been nominated by a handful of the county’s clubs, while McDaid’s club submitted a nomination on his behalf tonight.

Carr, a former Louth senior and Meath minor manager, who has been a successful club manager in Dublin, gave the post serious thought.

Indeed, Carr, who has strong ties to the Fanad area, was in Magheragallon last Sunday to watch the Donegal SFC clash of Gaoth Dobhair and Glenswilly,

“Having given the matter very careful consideration, and in the light of the logistics involved and my present position of Leadership in a large fast growing Secondary School I regret that I am not presently in a position to allow my name to go forward for nomination,” Carr said in a short statement released to local media tonight.

McDaid received a nomination from his club and confirmed: “My name is in the hat and I’ll let it go forward.

“It is really nice and an honour that my club have put in a nomination for me. It’s not a job I expected to come up at this time.

“Plenty of people have been encouraging me over the last few weeks. I’ll leave it now where it is and will sound people out to see what the feeling is like.”

Naomh Conaill are expected to submit a nomination for Cathal Corey and Seamus ‘Banty’ McEnaney, who this week stepped down as Wexford manager, may yet be nominated.

The deadline for nominations or applications is 6pm tomorrow.
