Audio: Strong words at half-time do the trick for Glengad United

SHANE BYRNE says that his Glengad United players needed a few choice words at half-time in today’s Clubman Shirts League Cup final.

Glengad trailed against Clonmany to a Jamie Coyle goal at the break, but they turned it around as Michael Byrne and Nigel McMonagle scored brilliant second-half goals.

But not before a dressing down from their manager.

“It’s not often that I do that, but I had to do it today,” Shane Byrne told Donegal Sport Hub.

“This is their fourth League Cup on the trot. They needed that wee kick today.

“We started slow, but considering the number of games they’ve had it’s no wonder. We were one down and it wasn’t the nicest place to be. I knew I could get it out of them and again they came back to win it.

“They showed great character again today. Clonmany put it up to us. If they had got a second we’d have been in trouble.”

Byrne was purring as he recalled his side’s two goals, both of which came out of the top drawer.

The Glengad manager said: “The first goal was what we’re all about, that passing and moving game.

“We had them stretched then and Nigel popped up with a super finish. Nigel has done really, really well and it’s fitting that he got the winner here.”
