GREG ALLEN, RTÉ’s athletics and golf commentator, was the special guest on Friday night at Letterkenny AC’s annual dinner and awards night.

Allen has called some of Ireland’s most memorable occasions in the sports for RTÉ and he spends a lot of time in Donegal when he can, especially in Inishowen, where he enjoys golfing at Ballyliffin.

Allen took time out to speak to Donegal Sport Hub’s Charlie Collins and he has high hopes for Donegal athletes Brendan Boyce and Mark English at next year’s Olympics.

“Brendan will have a real zone-in on a top 20 finish in Rio and let’s hope that Mark English keeps progressing,” he said.

“He has already made great strides forward. To get to the point he can get to, 1:44 or under, he has such class and a great racing brain.”

On Ireland’s current standing in the golf world, Allen said, in a wide-ranging talk on the sports: “We’re in a spectacularly good place in golf. It is one of our hot sports, alongside rugby and boxing.”
