Audio: Paddy Doherty says things are looking up for Illies Celtic

CAPTAIN PADDY DOHERTY scored twice as Illies Celtic overcame Convoy Arsenal in the FAI Junior Cup yesterday – and he says the Stranaclea side are looking on up.

Illies were relegated from the Inishowen League’s Premier Division last season and lost their opening two League games in the First Division this season, before a 1-0 win over Rasheney last weekend.

Yesterday, Illies defeated Donegal League Premier Division side Convoy Arsenal at Orchard Park with Doherty’s brace the key.

“It was a good day at the office,” Doherty told Donegal Sport Hub.

“Everyone did well. It’s good to get there.

Convoy are good and they move the ball about very fast. We had to dig deep to get the win in the end up. Jonny (Noone) had to make a couple of good saves and we’re glad to get over the line.”

For Illies to come to Convoy and win was a big result for a side that just needed an injection of confidence.

Doherty said: “The Donegal League is a very good standard. We’re hoping to get to the open stages. There are a lot of big draws before we’d get that far.

“The aim definitely is to get back up into the Premier Division. We got off to a bad start, but we’ve won three-in-a-row now and hopefully we can get back up.”
