Audio: Oliver Walsh’s delight as Loreto toast historic title

OLIVER WALSH COULD have been forgiven if he didn’t count his chickens in the closing stages of yesterday’s Corn Mac Neasa final at Garvaghey.

They were hatching all over the place as Walsh’s Loreto Community School side overcame St Clare’s from Ballyjamesduff 9-18 to 8-6, in an absorbing, entertaining contest.

Four first-half goals and another five in the second took them over the line – but not before a sweat.

“We got goals at crucial times,” Walsh said.

“It was close for a while, but we banged in three goals, we led at half-time and we were in control. They were always hanging onto us and we couldn’t shake them off.”

Loreto led by only seven at the break, something that didn’t perhaps reflect their superior play.

But the Milford scholars had enough to seal their first ever title – in the school’s 50th year.

Walsh said: “There were only three scores in it and we were concerned about that at half-time because they were always capable of getting goals.

“We conceded bad goals ourselves, but we knew they’d threaten us. They did that, but credit to our boys they hung in.”
