Audio: Nigel McMonagle on a debut season to remember at Glengad

NIGEL MCMONAGLE HAS had a debut season to remember at Glengad United.

McMonagle’s capture from his native Moville Celtic was the bluechip signing last summer by Shane Byrne.

McMonagle and Glengad had already won the Ulster Junior Cup and the Jackie Crossan Premier Division and yesterday McMonagle netted the winner against Clonmany Shamrocks in the Clubman Shirts League Cup final.

“It’s been a great season for Glengad. For everyone here, it’s been one to remember,” McMonagle said.

His winner was something special, coming after Michael Byrne cancelled out Jamie Coyle’s opener.

He said: “I took it off him and let it go with the left. The net opened up and I just swung the foot at it.

“They came back strong with frees and corners. They got a lot in the last five minutes and put everyone up, but we held out.

“We knew it would be tough. We just about got over the line last week and we knew that they’d be itching at the bit for us this week.”

Coyle gave Clonmany a first-half lead, but Shane Byrne read the riot act to Glengad at half-time.

McMonagle said: “Shane got us together at half-time, gave us a telling off but we picked it up and were more like ourselves in the second half.”
