Audio: Niall McDermott has big plans for basketball in Donegal as LyIT gear up for semi

Letterkenny Institute of Technology’s basketball team will face Dublin Business School in an All-Ireland Colleges League Division 2 semi-final on Tuesday evening.

The game takes place at An Danlann with a 7.30 tip-off and is the latest big game for a growing sport in the county.

A year ago, Niall McDermott took on the Development Officer’s job in the North West and has already led a new team, LyIT Donegal, into the Men’s National League.

Now, the LyIT’s own side face a massive game on Tuesday – and it comes as McDermott dreams big for the sport in Donegal.

“The aim is to have a team in the Super League,” he told Donegal Sport Hub this week.

“We’re in Division 1 at the minute so we want to get up the lader and be challenging for promotion into the Super League.

“I also have aims of a ladies national league team.

“You need a player pathway. The players need to see something for them when they come out of the underage scene. It energises the sport when the young players come and see players playing at the top level.”
