JOE ENGLISH told of his shock and his pride after his son, athlete Mark English, was named as Donegal Sports Star of the Year for the second year running on Friday night.

Mark English won a silver medal at the European Indoor Championships in Prague and booked his place at the 2016 Olympic Games during 2015.

The Letterkenny man and UCD AC athlete was unable to attend the 40th annual Donegal Sports Star Awards on Friday, but his father accepted the award on his behalf.

In winning, he became only the fourth person to win the overall award more than once after Sharon Foley, Billy Bourne and Sinead Jennings.

“It was a big shock to me so it’ll be a big shock to Mark,” Joe English said.

“He has been a part of this growing up. He was very thrilled to win it last year and he’s just back off the plane from South Africa after a training camp.”
