DONEGAL UNDER-21 defender Jack O’Brien said his side was ‘blessed’ to get over the line against Derry last night.

Donegal won 0-14 to 2-7, but when breathe could finally be drawn, Declan Bonner’s Donegal were left reflect on a night when they almost threw it away.

Second half goals by Niall Loughlin and Ruairi McElwee handed Derry the initiative after terrible Donegal defending and it was only a late, late free by Stephen McBrearty that sealed the win.

“We had a good lead at half time and we thought we could have pushed on,” said O’Brien, whose team led 0-9 to 0-3 at the break.

“Derry came at us hard and we’re lucky to get over the line. We were blessed. The second goal was a shambles and they nicked it in.

“The backs were against the wall, but we showed good character. We stuck in, we dug at it and we got the win. They had us on the ropes and we were lucky to get the win.”
