Audio: Gavin Cullen says Cockhill Celtic ‘deserved a result’ against Finn Harps

GAVIN CULLEN WAS PLEASED with how Cockhill Celtic played against Finn Harps last night, but left cursing how they let Ethan Boyle grab the match winner.

Harps advanced to the second round of the EA Sports Cup thanks to Boyle’s 23rd minute goal on a night when Ulster Senior League champions Cockhill departed into the night wondering how they didn’t, at least, earn extra time.

Jimmy Bradley, Malachy McDermott and Garbhan Friel, twice, went close to an equaliser in injury time, but Harps clung on.

“I thought we acquitted ourselves really, really well,” Cockhill player-manager Cullen said.

“Finn Harps struggled to contain us a bit in the last 20 minutes, which is a real positive. I expected them to be the fitter, stronger team but we upped it and left everything on the pitch. We deserved a result.”

The manner of the concession of the goal in the first half doesn’t sit well with Cullen.

The former Harps goalkeeper said: “I think there were five or six mistakes in the goal. There were a couple of chances to clear and then we let Ethan Boyle – who I thought was Harps’ best player – get in and he struck the goal well. He beat me at the near post which I’m disappointed.

“You get punished at this level for those kind of mistakes. At our own level, we’d probably get away with that a bit more.”
