Audio: Eimear Lafferty on Greencastle’s Ulster queens

EIMEAR LAFFERTY remembers a time when Ulster medals were a distant dream, but on Sunday the Greencastle ladies won the Ulster Cup for a fourth year in a row.

A 3-0 win over Lagan Harps saw Greencastle retain the silverware with Niamh Hegarty, Nicole Gordon and Karen Henry netting the goals for Paddy Hannon’s team, now the undisputed queens of Ulster.

“It means a lot,” Lafferty told Donegal Sport Hub.

“We’ve been going for five or six years. When I first came here we were getting beaten a lot.

“We are trying to build and to look at us from where we’ve came is just brilliant. From underage through, the girls are going good and we’re delighted.”

Seven of the Greencastle starting XI featured for Moville’s ladies in their Donegal senior ladies final win over Glenfin earlier on Sunday.

Lafferty said: “Fair play to the girls who played a game earlier. They were absolutely wrecked.”

One of the seven, Hegarty, set Greencastle on their way with a sublime opening goal.

Lafferty said: “The first half could have went either way. It was only when we got the third goal that we knew we had it. Niamh got an excellent first goal. That got the confidence up and we had to defend a bit.”
