Audio: “We were out of our depth…7 might have been mild” – Ollie Horgan

OLLIE HORGAN NEVER HIDES when the going gets tough and the Finn Harps manager faced the music after his team lost 7-0 to Dundalk.

Last night’s defeat was Harps’ heaviest ever loss in League football and Horgan wasn’t in the mood for making excuses.

By half-time, Dundalk were 4-0 in front and the ruthless champions added another three goals in the second half.

“We were out of our depth there tonight, without a shadow of doubt,” Horgan told Donegal Sport Hub.

We certainly aren’t in their League, but the disappointing thing is that any team in any League in the country, League or non-League, would have beaten us tonight.

“Seven might have been mild to us, but we’ll take it on the chin and move on.

“That’s maybe the first time they haven’t given their all – and they paid a heavy price. The positive is that we’ve only lost one game. We could have lost four games there with the manner we played.”

Robbie Benson’s brace in the first 20 minutes set the tone. Daryl Horgan netted a stunning third goal and David McMillan made it 4-0 before half-time. McMillan, Andy Boyle and Paddy Barrett scored second-half goals as Dundalk made it a Friday the 13th nightmare for Harps.

Horgan said: “We weren’t at any races tonight. Had we played at our best and Dundalk at their worst, we might have made it tight, but it was the other way around.

“It was certainly the worst performance I’ve seen from that group and Dundalk, to be fair, always have high standards and they certainly hit the heights there tonight.”

Horgan refused to use the energy expended during Tuesday’s 2-2 draw with Derry as an excused, but added: “Maybe they were still smelling themselves a little bit. There might be a little bit of that.

“We’re going to be in a battle at the bottom of the table and we know that. We need to battle, but tonight we didn’t battle.

“I have no doubt that they’ll get back to the battling qualities that were there.”

Harps now face St Patrick’s Athletic at Richmond Park on Tuesday night.

Horgan said: “The turnaround might be a blessing in disguise.”
