Audio: Declan Bonner says Donegal U-21’s ‘showed great character’

THERE WAS A bit of a disagreement afterwards but Donegal manager Declan Bonner was content with Mayo in the North-West Under-21 Cup final.

Bonner was missing 19 players from his panel as a result of injury, Kilcar in Ulster action and the Donegal seniors’ get-together but those who did play at the Sligo Centre of Excellence performed admirably.

Donegal forced extra-time having been four points down and then were two up at the start of the second period, only for Mayo to score two late points and draw 1-9 to 1-9.

Mayo wanted further extra-time, while Bonner was content enough with what had happened and felt in the interest in player welfare it was as well to leave it.

“You have to commend them on that and i’ll be chatting about the lads who are here,” Bonner said. “We brought the fight to Mayo and our boys came out on top in a lot of them battles.

“You could see that passion there today. We showed great character. Those lads wore the Donegal jersey with great passion today. We’re back in tomorrow morning and there’s lots coming up. ”
