LETERKENNY RUGBY CLUB on Sunday had a visit from two New Zealanders to watch the Rugby World Cup fixture between Ireland and Italy at the club house.

Sam Gallaher is a great grand niece of of the great late, Dave Gallaher, whom Letterkenny Rugby Club have named their ground after. Sam and her partner Steve McPherson (pictured above with with Letterkenny Rugby Club chairman Denis Faulkner) had travelled from New Zealand to England to see the All Blacks play Georgia on Friday and then flew to Ireland on Sunday and made a planned visit to the club to watch the game on Sunday.
The couple will be spending a few days discovering Dave Gallaher’s birthplace and the county before heading to Scotland to pick up Steve’s Falkirk roots. The club were delighted to meet Sam and Steve and to pass on connections between Letterkenny RFC and New Zealand.
Dave Gallaher, who was born in Ramelton in 1873 before his family emigrated, was the first All Black captain, when he took the 1905 New Zealand squad on a tour of Europe.
