LIKE HIS MANAGER, Donegal captain Hugh McFadden says last night’s reversal against Dublin will certainly add to the panel’s levels of experience.
Declan Bonner, the Donegal manager, has been insisting all season that building up some knowhow is the priority in the Allianz League Division 1 and although his side still have zero points following their three outings to date, there have been certain positives.
Like last night against Dublin at Croke Park. When Brian Fenton stroked over at the outset of the second half, Donegal trailed the All-Ireland champions 0-12 to 0-5 and things looked ominous. However, Bonner’s young troops dug in and by the 55th minute were just a point down at 0-16 to 0-15, only to lose steam and concede the last four points of the contest.
“A lot of the boys equipped themselves very well,” Killybegs clubman McFadden said. “I would say the majority of the boys played at minor or senior already here but as a new team, the experience will stand to us later in the summer.
“It’s a sorry dressing room in there. We came down here with great ambition of coming away with two points, as we did in the last two games. But unfortunately now, we go back up the road empty handed. We’re quite disappointed.
“One or two things didn’t seem to work in the first half and Dublin seemed to kick a few points quite easily. We battled hard in the first half and we did a few things well. I would say we had an accumulation of seven or eight wides and drop shorts which added to the score difference. And we missed a very good goal opportunity that would, I think, have taken it back to two points at the time. And they went up and made it six.
