Donegal Youth League defeat neighbours Inishowen

DONEGAL YOUTH LEAGUE overcame their counterparts, the Inishowen Youth League, this afternoon in the FAI Inter-League competition.

Inishowen YL 1-3 Donegal YL

A Michael Devine brace and one from Michael Roarty did the damage for Donegal, although Inishowen were very much in the contest when Bart Wesolowski pulled them back to just a goal down.

Inishowen started the better and Wesolowski flashed a shot just wide on 14 minutes and on the half-hour mark Eoghan Kelly had to make a saving tackle from Pat Loughrey following a misplaced pass from Calvin O’Brien.

Donegal grew into the game, with their front players Roarty and Devine, in particular, playing more influential roles.

On 33 minutes the away side took the lead when Devine seized on a kick-out from Inishowen goalkeeper Daniel Houghton and the Fanad United striker’s finish into the bottom corner from 25 yards was excellent.

The hosts were almost level within a minute, though, when a Finn McLaughlin free-kick found Jake Harkin, who was unmarked, only for Dane Dunworth in the Donegal goal to save. Then, Brad Patterson denied Adam Duffy on the goalline.

Dunworth ensured Donegal went in a goal up at the break when he made a top class point blank save from McLaughlin.

Both teams had opened their respective competitions with wins over Cavan/Monaghan.

Houghton had to make an important save from Cody Brogan to keep Inishowen’s deficit at just the one. However, from the resultant corner, which took place on 51 minutes, Donegal’s advantage did go to two.

Roarty it was who headed home Jonah Serrinha’s delivery.

On 70 minutes, Inishowen pulled a goal back when Wesolowski rifled into the roof of the net after a free-kick from McLaughlin had come back off the post.

Three minutes later, Darragh Deery, the Inishowen substitute, was just off target as he tried to level the score at 2-2.

However, on 78 minutes, Devine scored Donegal’s third from a free-kick as he drove under the defensive wall that should’ve offered Houston more protection.

Inishowen YL: Daniel Houghton; John Timlin, Jake Harkin, Denim McLaughlin, David Doherty (Jordan McGeady 55); Brendan Doherty (Darragh Deery 55), Finn McLaughlin (Oisin Hession 82), Stephen Doherty, Pat Loughrey (Nobert Indyka 82); Bart Wesolowski, Adam Duffy.

Donegal YL: Dane Dunworth; Calvin O’Brien (Jamie McKinney 56), Eoghan Kelly, Conor Duggan, Brad Patterson; Ryan Toye (Tarlagh O’Boyle 80), Darragh Greene (Jonah Serrinha 48), Eoghan Kennedy, Cody Brogan (Keelan Kelly 85); Michael Roarty, Michael Devine (Michael McHugh 90).
