Raphoe go close again, but Mossley sneak the win

BATTLING Raphoe just couldn’t catch a break this afternoon as the Donegal side went down to a frustrating loss against Mossley at the Royal and Prior.

Raphoe 0 Mossley 1

Matt Henderson netted the only goal of the game in the first half and Raphoe, despite several chances, couldn’t manage to find a way of salvaging the contest.

Raphoe opened brightly but Simon Goudie fired over from a Luke Witherow cross while an Ian McGonigle drive was deflected over the top.

Mossley had showed a flash of their own danger when Ross McIvor drilled over a cross that eluded everyone in the goalmouth.

Mossley took the lead in the 25th minute when Henderson flicked past Jonny Rankin.

The Raphoe goalkeeper was at his best moments later to keep out a blistering shot by Ricky Lee and Rankin then denied McIvor after a fine move by the visitors.

Witherow might have drawn Raphoe level late in the first half, but he was inches wide after Stephen Cleverley created the opening.

The home side started well in the second half, but Tommy Orr drilled wide after a brilliant attack, but Mossley were always dangerous themselves and Simon Todd was wide before a combination of Alexander Tinney and McGonigle kept the visitors at bay.

Rankin thwarted Todd again and Raphoe thought they’d drawn level on 46 minutes as Tinney’s shot found the net after Witherow won a short corner. Tinney’s effort, though, was too high and was chalked off.

Rankin kept Raphoe in it with a fine save from Todd while Goudie had another shot blocked by Mossley.

Like Tinney, Mossley’s Jordan Robinson had a ‘goal’ ruled out as he had too much elevation on his shot.

Raphoe should have equalised on the hour. Tinney and Witherow combined to set John Watt on his way but, after rounding Owen Doole, he fired wide and Raphoe fell to another loss in the Premier Division.

Raphoe: Johnny Rankin, William Wauchope, Simon Goudie, William Kilpatrick, Alan Meehan, Ian McGonigle, Alexander Tinney, Keith Meehan, John Watt, Luke Witherow, Alan Lyttle, Tom Eaton, Stephen Cleverley, Jordan Devenney, Tommy Orr, Evan Lyttle.

Mossley: Owen Doole, Phil Hamill, Mark Morlench, Matt Sullivan, David Glenny, Ricky Lee, Stephen Clarke, Rory Browne, Aaron Boyd, Jordan Robinson, Matt Henderson, Harry Dow, Simon Todd, Jason Hill, Phil Hamill, Ross McIvor.
