Jason Quigley is ‘determined for a sensational performance’

JASON QUIGLEY says he is ready pack a ‘sensational performance’ on Saturday week against Jorge Melendez.

The Ballybofey man (11-0) takes on the experienced Puerto Rican Melendez (30-7-1) on the undercard of Bernard Hopkins’ farewell bout against Joe Smith Junior at The Forum in Inglewood, Los Angeles.

Quigley hasn’t fought since a decision win against James De La Rosa in May, having beaten Freddy Lopez inside the opening round in March.

A planned bout in September was cancelled after Quigley sprained a wrist, but the Golden Boy Promotions prospect says he’s set to shine at the 17,000-capacity Forum next weekend.

“We’ve had a great training camp,” Quigley says.

“We’re meant to work hard; we’re meant to grind. No-one grinds as hard as me and my coaches here. That’s why I’m so hungry and determined for a sensational performance.

“It’s time to step it up and take it to another level on December 17.”

Quigley has been hard at work at The Rock Gym in Carson under the guidance of his coaches Manny Robles and Edgar Jasso.

His fight with De La Rosa went ten rounds – the first time Quigley was taken that distance in his professional career.

Quigley says: “I’m delighted to be coming in off the back of a great win in my last fight against a top-ranked opponent in James De La Rosa.

“It was my first time going ten rounds; my first time going beyond five rounds. I was relaxed, very controlled and very comfortable.

“I gained a lot of confidence from going the distance. I controlled the pace and I controlled the tempo against an experienced guy.”

Robles, who has also been working with Michael Conlan recently, was impressed by Quigley’s performance against De La Rosa.

The Mexican says: “It was his first time doing ten rounds and it went to the decision. He won every round and he won by unanimous decision so I was happy.

“He’s worked very hard for this fight. He’s focussed and he’s ready to go.”
