Audio: McConigley concedes title race gone already for Rovers after draw at Harps

EAMON MCCONIGLEY has conceded that Letterkenny Rovers are too far off the pace to challenge for the 4 Lanterns Ulster Senior League title this season.

Last night’s 3-3 draw at Finn Harps Reserves – when Rovers came from 3-1 down to draw – means the Leckview Park side are six points adrift of leaders Cockhill with a game more played.

“We won’t mount a challenge for the League,” McConigley told Donegal Sport Hub.

“Things would have to drastically change. I will have to look at a few things and try to put it right.

“We’re playing catch-up now and it’s too far away. We have the Knockalla Cup and the League Cup – that’s basically our season.

“We have a lot of new players in and they’re not gelling or realising how you have to contest matches in this League. We just haven’t come up to the standard.”

Darren McElwaine’s first-half goal had Rovers in front, but with Aaron McCready (2) and Gareth Doherty on the mark, the young Harps siezed control, only for McElwaine and sub David Shovlin to rescue the tie from the embers.

A clearly annoyed McConigley said: “David Shovlin came on as a sub – he couldn’t start because of a hamstring injury – and he changed the game when he came on. All he wanted to do was to win. He went for the ball and he brought life into us. Only for that, we were dead and buried.

“It is typical of the way we’re playing. We haven’t played well, but we’ve only lost once. Draws in this League are no good to you.”

After reaching the final of the Intermediate Cup and the Donegal News League Cup last season, they have spluttered somewhat this term.

McConigley said of last night’s game at Finn Park: I have to give it to Finn Harps and their young players. They played very well and they wanted to win more than we did. You could see that when they were going down with crap with ten minutes to go – that’s how hard they worked.

“We didn’t play well on the night. We just didn’t perform the way we should have.”
