Donegal League to probe ‘ineligible players’ claim as club submits protest

THE DONEGAL LEAGUE’S disciplinary body will investigate claims that ineligible players have played in the League.

Lagan Harps have lodged a protest with the League following their 2-2 draw with St Catherine’s at Orchard Park on Sunday in the Brian McCormick Sports Premier Division.

The Manorcunningham-based outfit claim that St Catherine’s fielded two players who were not eligible.

It is believed that the players at the centre of the dispute are Odhran McGuinness and Ryan Cunningham.

The Killybegs men had played for Finn Harps in the SSE Airtricity Under-17 League this year, but lined out for St Catherine’s in last week’s drawn encounter with Lagan.

Cunningham scored the opening goal in the game, with McGuinness also said to be prominent.

Under rule 34 of the Football Association of Ireland’s rulebook, the transfer period for amateur players ‘shall be 1st June to 30 September inclusive and the 1st September to the 31st January inclusive’.

Lagan sent their paperwork with the relevant fee to the Donegal League yesterday and the disciplinary committee will launch a probe into the matter.
