FOUR OF the five Donegal boxers in action yesterday in Dublin advanced in the National Senior Championships.

Orin McDermott, Paul Kelly, Garbhan Friel and John McDonagh all progressed to next weekend’s quarter-finals of the Championships, which were formerly the National Intermediates.

Raphoe ABC welterweight McDermott – a two-time Irish title winner while in the colours of Finn Valley ABC – overcame St Teresa’s James Cahill to book a place in a quarter-final against Conor Ivors (Thurles).

Twin Towns’ Kelly (above right) stopped Ballinacarrow’s Niall McDermott in their middleweight contest and Kelly will now take on Tony McGlynn of Crumlin in the quarter-final.

Illies Golden Gloves’ Friel and Letterkenny ABC’s McDonagh move on in the heavyweight division.

Friel stopped Corpus Christi’s Shane O’Brien and McDonagh KO’d Olympic’s Brian Ward.

The Donegal pair have managed to avoid each other in the draw with Friel now set to face Ryan Donnelly (Two Castles) and McDonagh to meet Dubliner Michael Frayne.

There was defeat for Illies man Martin Lynch at middleweight as he went down to Carrickmore’s Conal Deeney.

Illies super-heavyweight Davit Tstosoria is already into a semi-final and next Saturday will meet Leos puncher Marcin Skalski.
