Donegal boxers help North-West select to draw in Philadelphia

A NORTH-WEST selection, backed by nine Donegal boxers, drew 9-9 with a Philadelphia selection last night in the Clarion Hotel, Essington, Philadelphia.

A huge crowd was in attendance, including many ex-Pats now based in Philly.

Dungloe’s Oisin Wallace, Raphoe duo Dennis Lafferty and Orin McDermott and Convoy’s Bryan McNamee were among the winners for the local selection who made the trip out on Wednesday.

At 50kgs, Dungloe’s rising young puncher Wallace had the measure of Conor Cook, claiming a majority decision win.

His Dungloe colleagues Odhrán Mac Ruairí and Matthew McCole were beaten by Josue Rose and Tyhler Williams in their bouts.

Raphoe featherweight Lafferty overcame Ryshine Collins and welterweight McDermott – a former two-time Irish champion with Finn Valley ABC – was impressive in taking a unanimous decision against Dante Cobb.

McNamee, Convoy’s two-time Irish kingpin, took the verdict of the three judges in his contest with Anthony Damirez.

There was no joy for Dunfanaghy trio Sean Kelly, Ciara Craig and Odhrán McGinely with all three coming out on the wrong end of split decisions.

The squad was accompanied by coaches Eddie Harkin (Dunfanaghy), Joe Harkin (Dunfanaghy), Dominic McCafferty (Convoy), Gerard Keaveney (Raphoe) and Jim McCole (Dungloe), as well as Dunfanaghy referee/judge Michael McDermott and the Donegal Boxing Board President Peter O’Donnell.
