Audio: Niall Friel wants Gaoth Dobhair to ‘push on’ after Under-21 success

NIALL FRIEL HOPES that today’s Under-21 final success against Aodh Ruadh can be a catalyst for Gaoth Dobhair to kick on at senior level.

Gaoth Dobhair have had some disappointing summers of late in the senior championship, but they scored a superb and exciting 2-19 to 3-10 win over Aodh Ruadh in today’s Under-21 decider in Ballybofey.

All of the starting XV for Gaoth Dobhair are eligible for next year at the grade and there are signs that the buds can bloom around Magheragallon way again.

“It’ll take time, but hopefully we can push on,” Friel said after captaining his side to a memorable win.

“We don’t know where to put the finger on the senior team, but this whole team is underage next year.

“Tom Beag (Gillespie) was with us since under-12 and he put a never-say-die attitude into us that we’ve had since.”

Aodh Ruadh had led at half-time and looked set for the win when Eamonn McGrath netted their third goal, only for Gaoth Dobhair to score six-in-a-row and take control.

Friel said: “Every time the ball went dead, it was restarted in two seconds. It was so fast-flowing. In the end we got the scores.

“Ballyshannon won this age group at under-16s and we knew they had the pedigree.”
