BRETT MCGINTY’S selection on the Irish team for the World Youth Championships in Russia was rubber-stamped at the weekend by the IABA.

The Central Council ratified the team that will go to St Petersburg in November with welterweight McGinty confirmed.

Last month, the St Johnston man secured his place when he won his eighth Irish title when he stopped Paul Ryan – a 2015 World bronze medalist – in the Irish Under-18 final.

The Oakleaf ABC puncher is in superb form right now. Since winning a silver medal at the Commonwealth Youth Games in Samoa last year, he has won 13 of his 14 fights.

He was beaten by Gurgen Madoyan of Armenia at the European Youth Championships in Russia, but the 18-year-old is gunning for World glory in what will be his first time at a World Championships.

“This is a great opportunity for us,” he has said.

“It’s a platform for us to put our names out there. If we can get a few medals, it’s exactly what we need to be considered as the hopefuls for Tokyo in 2020.”
