LAGHEY’S GARY MCELHINNEY, navigating for driver Paddy McVeigh, is leading after the opening day of the Wexford Stages Rally.

After today’s nine stages, McVeigh, from Tyrone, and co-driver McElhinney have an 18 second-advantage in their S12b Subaru.

They lead from Steve Wood and Keith Moriarty in the S10 Impreza.

They went into first place after the sixth stage of the day in what is an extremely tight event so far, with another six stages to run tomorrow in the 45th running of the rally.

There are only 35 seconds between the top four crews.

Enda O’Brien and John Butler are in third while Letterkenny’s Ryan Moore, calling the notes for Bailieborough’s Gary Kiernan, are in fourth.

Dungloe pair Patrick McHugh and Pauric O’Donnell are in eighth spot after day one in their Mk2 Escort.

Letterkenny’s Johnny Baird is calling notes for Lisburn’s Wesley Patterson and they are 13th overnight.

Letterkenny brothers Kyle and Dale McGettigan had been having a good run in the Corolla until the last stage of the day, but are still in the mix as are Brendan McDaid and Karl Reid in their Escort.
