Audio: High-flying Milford are top ‘on merit’ says O’Donnell

MILFORD JUST KEEP defying the odds and manager Danny O’Donnell admits that his side is in ‘promotion form’.

The pace setters in the AllSportStore.com All-County Football League Division 2 defeated Sean MacCumhaills 2-10 to 0-13 on Sunday to cement their place at the summit.

Last summer, Milford were operating in Division 3. They won the third tier, but have taken Division 2 by storm.

With five games to go, Milford are the leading side after taking seven points from their last four outings.

“The boys have worked themselves into a top-of-the-table position,” O’Donnell told Donegal Sport Hub following what he called the winning of ‘a massive two points’ on Sunday.

“They’re getting rewarded for a lot of hard work. They’re good footballers. Ultimately, they’re just footballers. They’re getting what they deserve.”

O’Donnell took his team to the Finn Valley Centre prior to Sunday’s game and kept them as long as possible before crossing the bridge to Sean MacCumhaill Park, a decision he made to heighten the ‘focus’.

MacCumhaills pushed them all the way but, with Kyle Black’s early goal as a cushion, Milford saw it out, although they were thankful to Jonny Logue’s late three-pointer by the conclusion.

O’Donnell said: “We got off to a great start, but MacCumhaills got a spell before half-time. We expected them to get back at us, but when they got back level we got ahead right away again.

“We went for the goal and we got it.”

The Carndonagh-based schoolteacher, who lives in Letterkenny, previously enjoyed success with his native Naomh Muire.

He was something of a surprise appointment at Moyle View Park this year, but he’s on the verge of taking Milford to the top flight for the first time in the club’s history.

He said: “We’re doing everything in terms of preparation to give them a chance. A lot of people probably thought it was ‘somebody plus Milford’ to go down. They used that as motivation at the start of the season.

“You get a sense within the club that they’re driving a project, driving the club forward.”
