Shay Given waves goodbye to Green Army for one last time

IN A CORNER of the Stade De Lyon, two men waved goodbye after going to a great war one last time.

Shay Given and Robbie Keane have 278 Republic of Ireland caps between them, but following this afternoon’s 2-1 defeat to France at Euro 2016, the veteran duo are expected to call it a day.

Their waves were long and final.

The Green Army serenaded them one last time.

Given had retired from international football after Euro 2012, but in September 2014 he played against Oman in a 2-0 friendly win.

Given soon became Martin O’Neill’s first choice goalkeeper, but the Liffordman picked up a knee injury last October during the famous 1-0 win over Germany that reignited Ireland’s hopes of making it to France.

Given was blighted by injury during the season and despite a late bid by the 40-year old, it was Darren Randolph who played the four games in France.

Given made his debut for Ireland against Russia in 1996 and he played at the World Cup in 2002 and at Euro 2012, winning 134 caps.
