ILLIES CELTIC pulled the burning embers from the fire late last night to advance to the next round of the WFAI Intermediate Cup last night.

after extra time

In a dramatic Cup tie at Stranaclea, Illies trailed to Bonagee United at half-time in extra time, but the Inishowen side struck for a dramatic win.

The side managed by John Doherty and Adrian McGrory were heading for the exit door when they turned on their heels and flung their coats back in the Cup’s cloakroom again.

Illies drew level in the second period of extra time when a left-wing cross by Michelle McGonagle was headed home by Deirdre Grant from clsoe range.

Illies had the wind in their sails and they hit the match winner when a long ball found Paula McGrory, who wormed her way into position before firing high into the Bonagee net.

The Dry Arch representatives had edged the 90 minutes, but neither side had produced a clear-cut chance in normal time, although Anna Doherty had a goal ruled out for a handball.

Bonagee took the lead in extra time. Shannon McBride’s cross picked out Bridgeen Devenney, who controlled it superbly before riffling to the top corner.

They looked set to have their tickets stamped for the next round, but Illies had other ideas and eked out the win.
