Loreto Letterkenny Transition Year (TY) Girls in Golf Programme was set up following a golf awareness day held in October 2015 for Loreto’s 120 Transition Year students.

This was coordinated by Donegal Sports Partnership (DSP) and the Confederation of Golf in Ireland (CGI) and supported from Ulster ILGU and members from Letterkenny and Portsalon Golf Clubs’.

Following consultations with Brid Mulhern, Loreto Convent, Deirdre O’Toole, DSP and Ulster ILGU Junior Development Committee and Ms Jackie Ireland, Lady Captain, Letterkenny Golf Club a five week coaching programme was put in place with twenty TY students taking part.

The programme included 5 lessons with Club Professional, Seamus McMonagle and Brendan McGrath, Level 1 Coach and practise sessions supported by Jackie Ireland, Lady Captain and Vice-Captain, Mary Fowley, Brid Mulhern and staff from Loreto Convent and Deirdre O’Toole, DSP and concluded with a gala event including lunch and a fun scramble on the course followed by a presentation afterwards.

During the presentation Deirdre O’Toole, Donegal Sports Partnership and Ulster ILGU Junior Development Committee, congratulated Loreto Letterkenny and in particular Brid Mulhern for giving the TY students the opportunity to try golf in the school and take to part in the coaching initiative with Letterkenny Golf Club. Their enjoyment of the programme was evident by their full participation in all the activities and willingness to have a go!

She thanked Letterkenny Golf Club for facilitating the training and in particular, Lady Captain, Jackie, Vice-Captain Mary, PGA Professional, Seamus and Brendan for their enthusiasm and support.

Adding that ‘by inviting the girls to participate in their extensive Junior Golf Programme throughout the summer months, it’s an excellent example of how school/club links can be formed to promote the game of golf especially to young girls in the area.’

Loreto Letterkenny TY Girls in Golf Initiative was delivered as part of Sport Ireland’s Women in Sport Initiative through Donegal Sports Partnership with support from the ILGU, CGI, Loreto Convent Letterkenny and Letterkenny GolfClub.
