THERE WAS DELIGHT on the faces of those from Gaeil Fhánada at Glenties Comprehensive on Sunday afternoon.

The side from the windy peninsula finally saw their luck turn on final day, this time in the Ladies Junior Comórtas Peile na Gaeltachta Tír Chonaill, where they defeated a spirited Naomh Muire side 4-8 to 2-8.

The Gaeil Fhánada team are under the joint-management of John Cushnan, Hughie Shiels and John McConigley.

“We started away back at under-12 with a lot of these girls and we’ve worked our way through and had six or seven final losses,” Cushnen said afterwards. “Last year we were whitewashed in the same final [by St Naul’s]. We got into a habit of not knowing how to win finals.”

“We’re delighted to have got something and I always felt we had the chance then we could win something. We’re going to need all 26 of those girls this year. The girls that came on made a difference but that’s because the girls that were on burned themselves and that’s what we asked them.”

Cushnan spoke to Alan Foley afterwards …
