SHANE MCGINTY’S 17th goal of the season helped fire Institute to glory in the IFA Intermediate Cup final at Windsor Park tonight against Ards.

St Johnston man McGinty has been in a rich vein of form for the Waterside team, who have a promotion play-off against Ballinamallard still to look forward to.

McGinty stepped up to convert a brilliant 83rd minute penalty, awarded when Jamie McIntyre was taken down by John Convery.

Gareth Brown, who played in the Ulster Senior League previously with Bonagee United, scored twice for Institute.

Brown turned home a Jamie Dunne cross in the 20th minute only for Ards – this season’s Championship One champions – to draw level when Jordan Baker headed past Marty Gallagher.

Ards visibly wilted in the second half and Brown wonderfully smashed ‘Stute ahead in the 74th minute.

McGinty, who shot into the side netting with an earlier chance when he weaved his way into the box, made no mistake when the penalty was award, giving Liam McAuley no chance.

The Institute team contained former Finn Harps defender Mark Scoltock and former Kildrum Tigers player Darryl McDermott while St Johnston man Michael Lynch was the substitute goalkeeper for the Kevin Deery-managed team.
