THE NORTH-WEST 10K committee have appealed for entrants to pre-register for Sunday’s event, which is expected to attract around 2,000 participants.
To aid in the logisitcs, the committee have an online registration system in place at wwwnorthwest10k.com.
This evening, the first of four pre-registration days will take place at the Community Centre on Pearse Road, Letterkenny, from 5-6.30pm.
At the same time tomorrow and Fridat, entries will be taken and on Saturday from 3-6pm, committee members will also be in place at the Community Centre.
“There are so many ways and places that you can register now and we’re appealing for people to enter early to make it easier on everyone,” North-West 10k Chairman James Boyle told Donegal Sport Hub.
“It used to be that we had a huge volume of people coming in on Sunday morning, but now there are plenty of opportunities for people to come in early and registered.”
The first 2,000 entrants will receive a free North-West 10k t-shirt.
This is the 20th anniversary of the North-West 10k, first run in 1997 and the organisers are seeking additional help on their committee.
Mr Boyle said: “Before that, the race ran for around 11 years when the army personnel at Rockhill ran a 10k. They gave it up in 1996 and the present committee took over in 1997.
“A lot of us would like to see some new blood come in and assist us for 2017.”
The event has gone from strength-to-strength. Boyle remembers a time when their safety plan was a one-page document. This year, the safety plan extends to 68 pages.
On Sunday, traffic restrictions will be in place around Letterkenny.
Boyle said: “We’re asking people to be patient and to obey the stewards and the Gardaí. “
The charities to benefit from this year’s event are The Irish Pilgrimage Trust – Donegal Branch; and Spina Bifida Hydrocephalus Ireland, Donegal Branch.
Entry fees are €15 for the run and €10 for walkers. Under-18s are not permitted to enter as runners.
