Moville CC lose out in Ulster U-16B final against Ballyjamesduff

MOVILLE COMMUNITY COLLEGE fell short in their attempt to win the Corn Cuchulainn final (Ulster U-16B) for the first time at Garvahey this afternoon.

Moville Community College 0-7 St Clare’s College Ballyjamesduff 1-13

The side managed by Brendan Callaghan and Seamus Gallagher had plenty of chances but on the day were beaten by the better side.

St Clare’s had a huge height advantage in the forward line with Oisin Kieran the apex of the attack and it was the centre-forward who scored the only goal of the game when he took a long ball in from Nathan Galligan before shooting past Gary McDonald in the Moville goal.

That came on 27 minutes at the critical juncture in the contest were the Cavan team were starting to press their foot down on the accelerator. And how it proved to be the only goal of the game was anyone’s guess.

Anyhow, although it was Moville who scored the first point through a free from Paddy Faulkner, it was St Clare’s who scored the next three points, with Karl Consgrove scoring the first of this four from play, Patrick Lynch and captain Sean Briody on the mark.

The first real punctuation point came on 12 minutes when Moville’s Eoin O’Doherty was unfortunate to see his effort at goal rebound off the butt of the post. Evan Craig knocked over the rebound.

Then, three minutes later, Faulkner planted a ball into the St Clare’s square and, at the second attempt, Finn McLaughlin got a punch on it but it flew a few inches wide.

Moville, who fell 0-6 to 0-3 behind, saw McLaughlin have another chance when he tried to stab home but Evan Charters in the St Clare’s goal saved.

That was a prelude to Kiernan’s goal on 27 minutes and suddenly, Moville found themselves 1-6 to 0-3 down.

Their conclusion to the first half was poor as St Clare’s almost got a second goal a minute later when Galligan punched off a post following Edward Devereaux’s diagonal ball.

Adam O’Connor scored a point for the team managed by Damien Tiernan and might’ve added a goal, only for McDonald to save down low right at the end of the half.

Moville were 1-7 to 0-3 down at half-time.

In truth, they’d given themselves too much to do and despite all the endeavour in the world, never made any serious inroads. Craig was lively in attack and O’Doherty scored a nice point early in the second half.

At the other end, though, St Clare’s could pick their break and by the 50th minute had reamed off six second half points to Moville’s three. Cosgrove was the pick of the bunch as Mark McSharry got forward from corner-back to score.

At 1-13 to 0-7 down, whatever thoughts Moville had that it wasn’t their day was confirmed when substitute Kenny Doherty set up McLaughlin, who round goalkeeper Charters only to shoot off the post from a yard or two out.

Up to that point it been a very sporting game without even so much as a yellow card but a late row, with players from both sides involved, saw Eoghan Gillen of Moville and St Clare’s Brian Malocca given straight red cards in the last minute.
